Simple habits to remove toxins from your body

LAST week I asked you to join hands in cancer prevention as part of the global campaign to reduce the burden of disease resulting from cancer.

The primary causes of cancer include pesticides, chemicals, toxins and ultraviolet radiation. In this article I am giving you advice on simple ways to naturally detoxify or remove toxins from the body so as to support your physical and mental health.

1. Practice water therapy. The question is how is this water miracle practiced? Every morning as soon as you get up from your bed and before washing your face or brushing your teeth drink at least one litre of water. For the next 45 minutes you should not eat or take any beveragesAll this should be preceded by some preparations. Foremost, because in our environment the water is not safe to drink without boiling I am advising you to boil the water to remove impurities. Alternatively get bottled water to be on the safe side. Make sure you have at least 2 litres of water near your bed so that you can grab a bottle quickly.

You should not leave the water in the kitchen because that is too far for you to go and fetch. After the last night’s dinner or before going to bed you should not eat or drink stimulating beverages or soft drinks. While eating your meal you should not drink cold water as you chew the food. The best habit to practice is to learn to drink warm water. Forty years ago I worked with three teams of Chinese doctors at Newala hospital in Mtwara Region. I noticed they were used to hot water throughout. They were never used to drink cold water like most people do in Tanzania.

2. Remove problem of bad breath. If you have the nagging problem of bad breath it means your systems are full of toxins. Therefore you should drink at least five glasses of water as the first thing in the morning. This habit of drinking water will instantly correct your problem of bad breath and it will in turn keep your systems clean.

3. Scrape your tongue. Scraping the tongue daily removes any build-up on the tongue, which, if left untreated, may house a significant number of bacteria. You do not need sophisticated equipment or tool. You can use a stainless steel blade or spoon to scrape your tongue. The tongue should be scraped very gently from the back to the front seven to 14 times. If you can afford, I suggest you should obtain an electric tooth brush and do the scraping from the back of the tongue to front.

4. Oil pulling. Oil pulling is the process of swishing one tablespoon of coconut oil around in your mouth for between 10 and 20 minutes. The chemical reaction between your saliva and the oil literally “pulls” bacterial toxins out from the deepest crevices in your whole oral cavity. The electric tooth brush I mention earlier is also very good for removing left over foods from the teeth.

5. Eat more organic green leafy vegetables. I suggest you should eat Kale, spinach, broccoli and celery. All these greens are your friends. They contain vital nutrients, plenty of fiber, which help to cleanse the blood. 6. Try some chlorophyll. Another great addition to your diet can be chlorophyll in liquid form such as Ed Marks product called Splina. Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in plants and algae. Chlorophyll can increase red blood cells and bind with toxins and heavy metals, sending them on their way and out of your body.

 7. Consider gentle detoxifying teas. Add some turmeric (Binzari) or Holy Basil (Tulsi) tea to your evening routine or try lemon tea for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. Garlic and spirulina are all great natural detoxifiers and chelators or binders of heavy metals such as lead and mercury.

8. Take a media break while you eat. This is just a good habit to get in for proper digestion. While you eat your lunch or as you sit down with your family for dinner, instead of focusing on who is texting you or what is playing on TV, why not focus on what is going on around you or with each other? Chew your food slowly as well−chewing is the first stage of digestion. If you chew your food properly you will speed up the process of digestion hence food will taker shorter time in the stomach, and the small and large intestines.

9. Breathe in more. Pay attention to your breathing. Does your breathing become shallow when you are stressed or upset? Decide to take a deep breath instead. Deep breathing can help cleanse the respiratory system and oxygenate the blood.

10. Try practicing meditation. Meditation not only calms the mind, it also helps relax those stress responses that are pumping too much cortisol into your body, creating inflammation and toxic build-up. Start with even 5 minutes and simply focus on your breath as you close your eyes and go within. A simple way of doing meditation is to sit on your bed with the palms of your hand holding the thigh muscles that are inserted on your knees. Then clasp your palms on your head. If you maximize the concentration you will notice your body will start sweating.

11. Do some aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercises tend to pump life-giving oxygen and feel-good hormones into your body. But did you also know that, according to researchers at the Swedish Karolinska Institute, during a workout the muscles act like the liver and produce an enzyme that clears out depression-causing chemicals. Try them and notice the change in to your mental and physical health.

12. Do Stretching and releasing. Stretching tends to keep your muscles and joints flexible. It also lowers inflammation and “fight or flight” responses that can lead to chronic diseases. In order to do stretching properly I tend to advise people to lie down facing the floor then I ask them to lift their head while stretching their forearm and make sure they stretch the back to the maximum like a cobra. Alternatively, I ask them to push the wall and align the muscles of the thoraco-lumbar spine at the back.
