Twiga Cement awards biodiversity researchers


TANZANIA Portland Cement Company (TPCC) has dished out 9,500 euros (almost 23m/-) for the second time awarding top three winners of the 3rd Edition of its Quarry Life Awards (QLA) campaign.

TPCC, trading as Twiga Cement seeks to promote new research biodiversity projects in order to raise awareness about the biological value of mineral extraction sites worldwide. TPCC Environment Manager and QLA Coordinator in Tanzania Richard Magoda said the awards conducted by TPCC, a Heidelberg Group subsidiary attracted over 50 participants.

“The participation was open to higher learning institution students and researchers who submitted proposals on Biodiversity related topics,” Mr Magoda said. The overall winner was Ms Diana Mbogo, a Mechanical Engineer graduate whose project was research on Educational, Innovative and Attractive Biodiversity Museum and won 5,000 euros (about 12m/-).

The second winner was Dr Siajali Pamba of the University of Dar es Salaam who won 3,000 euros (some 7.0m/-) on his research on ecological modeling of species richness. The third prize went to Mr Boniphace Nkombe who won 1,500euros (3.5m/-) after researching on analyzing the role of earthworm to improve soil.

Twiga Cement Managing Director Mr Alfonso Velez encouraged others students and researchers to dare and make use of such opportunities that accompanied by many doors of possibilities,’ said Velez. The competition began in September 2015 that pits all higher learning institution students to research on biodiversity related topics.
