Cleric touts patriotism in run-up to general election

Moshi Catholic Diocese Bishop, the Right Reverend Isaac AmaniMoshi Catholic Diocese Bishop, the Right Reverend Isaac Amani

TANZANIANS have been urged to show patriotism to their country during this time as the country inches towards the October 25 elections by putting Tanzania’s national interests first and political parties’ interests second.

Moshi Catholic Diocese Bishop, the Right Reverend Isaac Amani, said that true patriots were ready even to die for their country, or work without or with a very little pay, to save their country.

In his apostolic letter to Moshi and Mbulu Catholic Diocese where he is an Apostolic Administrator, Bishop Amani hailed the people for their turning out in large numbers during registration in the Biometric Voter Register (BVR), but cautioned that they were far from having completed their duty without voting.

Bishop Amani said the electorate did the right thing to turn in huge numbers for election campaign rallies, but should be more focused to carefully listening to candidates for councillorship, parliamentary and presidential posts, examine their statuses so as to establish who is best out of them.

He said the mammoth task would be completed well if all who have registered turn out in huge numbers to vote peacefully, those who supervise the election do their duties diligently, in free and fair environment so each ballot counts for one who it was meant for.

The cleric said the faithful should not only concentrate in religious matters but also engage in civic duties fully, quoting the Gospel of St Mark, Chapter 12:7: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s ...”

He said there is a need to build a new Tanzania, well focused on development and the only people who can help achieve that are voters, by electing righteous, hardworking people, whose election manifestos can really be translated into action.
